Synopsis:
Three sisters are recruited by a lazy divine chicken god to defend the Year of the Rooster. In exchange, he promises to fix their parents' rocky marriage. Armed with magical jewels, high-tech batons, and sisterly teamwork, they battle bizarre monsters, keep their identities secret, and juggle school, crushes, and occasional cosmic catastrophes.
I'm happy to be back to bring you guys another Tokusatsu project! This time, it's the fourteenth and final entry in Toei's Fushigi Comedy Series, Yugen Jikkou Sisters Shushutorian! This is another whimsical magical girl show, so if you've seen Paipai or Poitrine, you know the drill.
I've always been interested in this show in particular because of its relative obscurity. It's the only entry in the Fushigi Comedy series where Toei didn't even bother uploading the first two episodes to their Toei Tokusatsu World Official YouTube channel with English subs, unlike Paipai, Poitrine, and every other Fushigi entry. That means this should be the very first time any episodes of this series are ever translated into English!
Frankly, I didn't plan to sub any more Fushigi Comedy or Tokusatsu shows after doing Paipai and Poitrine for a few reasons, one being that Tokusatsu is really more of a side venture for me compared to J-Dramas, but mainly because they have so many episodes. Still, my good buddy Farfromsleep approached me and kindly offered to buy the Japanese DVDs to make brand new encodes. The WEB-DL RAWs available online are a bit rough image quality-wise and are missing the trailer, which I always like to sub. So given this new opportunity to work from the original DVDs, I felt compelled to give the Fushigi Comedy Series another go!
I ended up really enjoying watching and working on this. Stories about sisters are among my favorite storytelling tropes. I also like that it's much more action-heavy than Poitrine and Paipai. In a way, it feels like Toei/Fuji TV's evolution of the Sukeban Deka formula, minus the delinquent leads, but still featuring kick-ass women spreading righteousness, which is always cool.
Speaking of the proverbs, those were the trickiest part for me to translate. Thankfully, I found all of them transcribed online, and the show itself explains them well, but it was still tricky to translate them so they read naturally and carried the weight of actual proverbs without giving everything away, since the show explains them anyway. Keeping that intent was a tricky balancing act.
Another translation choice I want to touch on is the title itself. Given that Toei never uploaded the first two episodes of the show to their English YouTube channel, the actual title "Yugen Jikkou Sisters Shushutorian" has also gone without an official translation. The first part 有言実行 (Yūgen Jikkō) roughly translates to "making good on one's word" or "carrying out one's promises," but it's a very tricky phrase to translate as it doesn't neatly map to any given English saying 1:1, so I settled on "Walk The Talk" to make it work as a title that functions as both a self-announcement and something that can be addressed to them, and also to drive home the energy of the original idea. As for the katakana part シュシュトリアン or "Shushutorian", I went with "Chouchoutrian" instead of a strict romanization because the "シュシュ" part actually comes from the French word "chouchou," meaning darling or favorite, so I figured it was more appropriate than "Shushu" as it better reflects the word's French origin, and also because the Japanese DVDs actually have it written this way.
Anyway, that's all from me. As usual with these projects, this was subbed by ear, so excuse any flubs. I hope Tokusatsu fans get a kick out of this one. I'm happy to add another entry in the Fushigi Comedy series with proper English subs!
